At Dunbar Grammar School we are committed to an integrated approach to pupil support. Senior Management, external agencies and the Pupil Support Department work in partnership with students and their families to provide a quality service.

The school operates a vertical guidance system with 4 staff members, each taking responsibility for one tier of 'C' classes in addition to one other class.

 

Mrs Pamela McIntosh is responsible for all C1 classes in addition to 4C5.

Mr Iain Robertson is responsible for all C2 classes in addition to 3C5.

Mrs Annette Rawson is responsible for all C3 classes plus 2C5.

 

Mrs Susan Wood is responsible for all C4 classes (no 1C5 class this year).

OBJECTIVES OF THE GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT

 

PASTORAL

 

·        Ensure that each pupil is known personally and in some depth by their guidance teacher.

·        Ensure that each student has the opportunity to meet individually with their teacher at key stages.

·        Respond quickly and appropriately to the specific needs of individuals.

·        Liase with external support and welfare services and SMT.

·        Provide students with access to good information that will enable them to make informed choices.

·        To consider the pupils personal, social and intellectual development.

·        To help the pupil to be aware of their own development, to reflect on, and to accept responsibility for it.

·        To foster the development of good relations between teachers and pupils.

·        To work well with the home in all aspects of pupil development.

·        To systemise and make effective the recording and communication of information relevant to the welfare of individual pupils.

·        Create a stimulating and enjoyable atmosphere for learning and teaching.

·        Enable students to participate in their society.

 

 

 

 

CURRICULAR AND VOCATIONAL

 

·        Prepare students for choice in education, training or employment.

·        Provide a balanced programme of PSE that meets the needs of young people.

·        Liaise with Careers Advisor and Librarian.

·        Provide support at key stages, i.e. P7 – S1 transition, S2 – S3, S4 - S5.    

 

 

MONITORING ATTAINMENT

 

·        Consult with subject teachers and parents.

·        Provide an overview of progress at report time.

·        Guide students through the processes of evaluation and target setting.

·        Liaise with Learning Support and Depute Heads through review meetings for students with IEP’s and additional support needs.

 

ADMINISTRATION

 

·        Record information.

·        Monitor attendance.

·        Maintain PPR’s.

·        Provide staff with relevant information on pupils.
